Damascus Steel Knife Care & Maintenance

Your Shard Blades Damascus steel blade is more than just a culinary or gift piece—it’s a finely crafted tool built for performance, beauty, and longevity. Damascus steel’s high carbon content gives it an exceptional, long-lasting edge, but this same quality makes it more sensitive to moisture. With the right care, your knife will serve you for decades while preserving its striking patterns and flawless performance.

Daily Care
• Wash immediately after use – Hand wash your knife in warm water with a mild dish soap.
• Dry completely – Use a soft, clean towel to remove all moisture.
• Oil for protection – Apply a light coat of food-safe mineral oil before storage to prevent oxidation. Mineral oil is ideal because it’s affordable, safe, and doesn’t spoil. If unavailable, cooking oil can work temporarily, though it’s not recommended for long-term storage.

If Rust Appears – Don’t Panic

Fresh Damascus steel can develop small rust spots quickly, sometimes in minutes, especially in humid conditions. This is natural and easily fixed:
1. Rub the affected area gently with apple cider vinegar or lemon juice.
2. Wash with warm, soapy water.
3. Hand dry thoroughly.
4. Apply a protective coat of oil.

Over time, your blade will develop a natural patina, giving it greater resilience against moisture.

Storage Tips
• Store in a dry location away from humidity.
• Avoid long-term storage inside leather sheaths or rolls, as leather retains moisture. If necessary, apply a heavier coat of oil first.
